HISTORY OF JAS |
- Jamaica AIDS Support began unofficially in November 1991 as a result of a group of men coming to the aid of a friend dying with AIDS related complication
|
- In June 1992, funding was received through USAID and Jamaica AIDS Support became a reality.
|
- 1992 also saw the opening of the 12 bed JAS Hospice “Life”, the first hospice in Jamaica and one of three in the Caribbean which served well over 300 people before it was forced to close in September 2000 due to a lack of sustainable funding.

- 1993 The Ocho Rios Chapter opened its doors
|
- 1994 The Montego Bay Chapter opened its doors
|
- 1996 The St. Mary/Portland Chapter opened its doors. This Chapter sadly had to close in 1998, again due to lack of funding.

- The Royal Netherlands Government took on the role of core funders in 1996 and remained so until April 30, 2002
|
- Christian Aid in London began funding “Life’s Skills”, our Youth Initiative in 1997
|
- “Life’s work”, the Income Generating projects for persons living with HIV/AIDS began in Kingston in 1996, in Montego bay in1999, and in Ocho Rios in 2001
|
- Financial support has also been given by GTZ ,PAHO, UNICEF and UNAIDS

MISSION STATEMENT
Jamaica AIDS Support (JAS) is dedicated to preserving the dignity and rights of persons living with HIV/AIDS and to help in the fight against the spread of HIV/AIDS by providing education and other interventions to promote changes in attitudes and behaviours and empower persons to respond positively to the challenges.
JAS does not discriminate against persons because of colour, race, disability, gender, class, sexual orientation, age or religious belief. |

ORGANISATIONAL OBJECTIVES
In pursuit of this mission, JAS gives primary attention to:
- Providing support and care for those infected with or affected by HIV/AIDS
- Providing support and education for the members of specific minority groups which are considered to be at high risk of contracting HIV/AIDS
- Advocating for the preservation of the human rights of persons living with HIV/AIDS and the members of minority groups which are considered to be at high risk of HIV
